Hummingbird Moth

Last night we were treated to a guest appearance by a Hummingbird Moth!  We think it might be a sphinx moth which is one of the hummingbird moths.

He stayed for about ten minutes – zooming around the petunias – and us! – using his long proboscis to capture delectable bits of nectar!

With it’s hovering behavior and humming sounds you might confuse it with a humming bird at first – but it’s antennae and absence of a beak set you straight!

A wonderful end to an enjoyable  birthday for Ritchey and his twin brother, Rickey!
